Let's Get Together!

The Maryland Professional Photographers Association (MDPPA) is dedicated to encouraging growth through education, inspiration, and elevation of its members. We offer a variety of programs and events that help photographers learn new skills, stay inspired, and connect with other professionals in the industry.

Collaborative Work Days
Many of us work on our own, but working together once in a while is more fun! We invite you to join us for our monthly Collaborative Work Days (CWD), where we meet to catch up, exchange ideas, work side by side, share projects, present questions and answers, and feature tips and tricks! All are welcome, come for a bit or stay the whole time, every 2nd Monday of the month. Currently we are meeting by Zoom, but will be planning some in person CWD's !

Monthly Programming
Every month we offer workshops taught by experienced photographers who share their knowledge and expertise with our community. We
welcome you to join us as we gather for these opportunities for meaningful enrichment and collaboration.
Check out our YouTube channel to see what to expect!  Additional programs are added throughout the year, so check back often. Mark your calendars for our 2024 Annual Convention, April 11-13th in Columbia, MD!

Image Competitions
We welcome you to join us for our image competitions three times a year! Whether entering your work, tuning in to see what others have entered, or both, our competitions include the opportunity to observe live judging via Zoom and inspire and elevate your work. Three times a year, members and guests can showcase their work and be judged by a panel of industry experts. Our Annual Competition takes place in
October. Quarterlies are held in March and July. Plus, join us each January for a new image competition educational program!

    Outing Leader: Jay Cathell

    Date: May 17 - 19, 2024

    Times:

Friday 7:00 PM (Sunset - until you are finished)

Saturday 4:50 AM (Sunrise - until you are finished)

Sunday 4:50 AM (Sunrise - until you are finished)

    Meeting Points

Friday : NPS Visitor center parking lot: Google Maps Location!

Saturday : NPS Visitor center parking lot: Google Maps Location!

Sunday : Design your own Adventure

For those that are planning on attending this outing here are some suggestions to make the most of your time.

We will meet at the NPS (Barrier Island Visitor Center on map) parking lot (free parking here) at 7PM Friday May 17th. If the gates are attended (at the entry to the park itself) there is a charge to enter and park unless you have the senior pass or a season pass to the national parks. It is pricy. $25 per vehicle but it is a seven day pass. You can ride in with someone that has a pass (I do) for free. If the gate is unattended you can just ride in. (that is usually the case in the early AM hours) Not sure what time the attendant leaves the entrance shack in the evening.

    Friday May 17th

After meeting at the NPS parking lot we will continue on to the federal park and through the entrance continue on for a quarter mile to either Bayside Dr. or Ferry Landing Rd (both on the right hand side. (about 15 minute ride from our rendezvous point)This is the bayside of the island to get the best view for a sunset or walk the extensive boardwalks to possibly see wildlife. After sunset we can stay in this location or move over to the ocean side to possibly get a look at the Milky Way. Milky Way images will be lucky as the moon is a waxing half-moon on the 17th. I like to be ready to shoot an hour before sunset and an hour before sunrise. Sunset is at 8:07 PM on May 17th

    Saturday May 18th

Rendezvous or proceed on to the Assateague Federal Park. As soon as you go through the attendant gates take the first left and park behind the solar panels close to the restroom facilities. From there walk the boardwalk out to the beach to setup for sunrise images. Sunrise is at 5:47 AM. I will arrive at 4:50 AM and be setup on the beach at 5:10 AM ready to shoot. If you are so inclined and want to try Milky Way images in the AM I would suggest starting at about 4AM. For me, when the sun comes over the horizon, I am usually done shooting. Best colors are usually 50 to 20 minutes before sunrise.

If you like we can get breakfast and then go to Berlin and photograph that beautiful town.

(BTW you are supposed to pay fee at Ranger Station if booth is unattended Credit card only)

    Sunday May 19th

If there are those that want to shoot an entirely different type thing…….perhaps on Sunday these places are great photo ops of water scenes and small water communities. Anyone interested in one of the things (other than Cambridge)..I’ll be glad to tag along for some local knowledge. (Jay Cathell)

    Things you will need.

    • Headlamp or flashlight (I much prefer a headlamp)
    • Layers of warm clothing (It is always colder and windier on the beach than you anticipate)
    • Gloves and hat
    • Shoes you don’t mind getting sand in or perhaps wet (mud too)
    • Tripod with ball head for sunrise/sunset exposures
    • Tripod with gimbal for wildlife exposures
    • Remote shutter release/intervalometer for long exposures
    • Lenses, 24-70 or 24-105, for sunrise/sunset,15-35 2.8 or equivalent for Milky Way and sunrise sunset shots, 150-600 or 100-400 for wildlife  (all depends on what you like to shoot)
    • ND filters
    • Set up your user defined settings on your cameras so you can switch quickly with just the turn of a knob for quick shot opportunities
    • Milky Way shots are usually at f2.8, 16mm,25 sec, at ISO of 3200 of 6400.(for me) Good idea to program your intervalometer before arrival to avoid the frustration
    • PhotoPills app for your phone which is great for finding the Milky Way. I have used it with success.
    • Insect repellant

MDPP-A - Day at the Races, and Tailgate

    Outing Leader: Phil Fabrizio

    Date: May 19, 2024

Event Times: Gates are open 10 AM until 7 PM, the event starts at 12 noon and runs to 6 PM.  Shuttle services are available from 9:45 AM to 6 PM.

Parking/Cost: Polo Grounds at 15598 Hughes Road $15 entry fee

Join Phil Fabrizio on Sunday, May 19, 2024, for a day at the races in Poolesville, MD.  It’s a tailgate for friends and associates at the Potomac Hunt Races.  He has purchased an outside rail pass that enables registrants close to the action, right on the track’s fence line.

The Potomac Hunt Races is an annual steeplechase race hosted in Poolesville, MD, just outside Washington, DC. Multiple races run throughout the day, and horses jump timber and brush fences.

It’s both a springtime tailgate and a photo opportunity to catch fast action.  I will be on hand to provide guidance, tricks of the trade in capturing action.  Also, there will be plenty of “derby hat” portrait moments.

The race is held at Bittersweet Field on Partnership Road in Poolesville.  The Polo Grounds at 15598 Hughes Road offers shuttle Pass and Reserved parking for $15, which is the entry fee.

The event is close to the Mckees-Besher Wildlife fields, famous for its summer Sunflowers, which many have visited in the past.

The class aspect of the event will be how to photograph a fast sporting event from different angles.  Our railside location provides steeplechase action, but you can walk the grounds taking street photography of dressed-up participants.  Phil will also provide a crash course on the pre-editing of PhotoMechanic software.

    What to bring:

It’s a photographic tailgate.  A sharp eye and fast camera with long lens, such as a 70-200mm zoom, or long prime lens 85 or 135mm will do.  Longer prime/zoom lens only work on straightaways.  Phil will supply a laptop, display unit and storage device for those that want to share their best shots of the day.

It's a tailgate.  Bring only what you can carry in/out. Phil will have ice and water for all.  Derby hats, khaki’s, sunscreen, shorts, muck shoes or boots (yes, there can be horse poop) and sunglasses.  Think dress your best, it’s a horse show!

    * Register for this event by 5/17/24.

Check out their website here for more information.  https://potomachuntraces.net

    Photographers and Stargazers!

Join Lee Bostic as he travels to Cherry Springs State Park! Spend the weekend in the beautiful mountains of North Central Pennsylvania photographing the Milky Way and star trails (our main focus), sunrises, sunsets, and wildlife.

    When: July 5-7, 2024

Where: 4639 Cherry Springs Rd, Coudersport, PA 16915 Meet-up details will be forthcoming.

Accommodations (two options): 1) A rental house for 10 people is being secured. The rental cost will be evenly split among guests. Details to follow. 2) Find your own lodging. Registration tickets are available based on your selection.

    CHERRY SPRINGS STATE PARK

It’s been named the best place on Earth (yep, the whole planet) for stargazing by the Travel Channel and has been designated a Gold Level Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association.

Basic equipment needed to photograph the Milky Way or Star Trails

    1. A camera – any DSLR or Mirrorless camera will be fine.
    2. A ‘fast’ lens - one with an aperture of f/2.8 or faster. Generally, a wider lens (24mm or less), is easier to work with when starting out.
    3. A tripod – most tripods are fine, but make sure it can hold your camera completely still!
    4. A remote shutter release – you can use a wired, wireless, or phone app release. Your camera’s built-in self-timer is a good alternative. (Intervalometer)
    5. A head flashlight with a red-light mode – is not essential, but it can make a huge difference, as red light doesn’t affect your natural night vision.

MDPPA is part of the Community Network of Professional Photographers of America (PPA).  We are a separate membership organization, yet we are mutually beneficial.

There are many benefits to being a member of both MDPPA and PPA. Some of our programs offer Continuing Education Merits for PPA member attendees, and PPA Member Speakers for our programs are eligible to receive speaker merits from PPA. Our image competition program is in association with PPA guidelines. Many MDPPA members are also PPA members and will be happy to answer your questions about either organization. Our PPA Councilors for the state of Maryland, Steve Clark, Anne Looney, and George Singleton, would also be happy to talk with you. They can be reached through our membership directory.

You will find that MDPPA offers a wonderful community of colleagues, who share camaraderie, collaboration, ideas and resources, education and experience. We look forward to welcoming you with our hospitality!
