Photoshop: The Basics with Bruce Press

The MDPPA annual convention is coming up, and in preparation for our pre-convention advanced photoshop class, MDPPA Member Bruce Press will be presenting a photoshop class for those who want to shore up their skills in order to be ready for this class.  Or if you just want to shore up your skills, this class is for you!

    Photoshop: The Basics

Is your creativity constrained by someone else's vision? If you don't have a basic working knowledge of Photoshop, it may be.

Photoshop is a very deep toolbox with so many menu options, parameters, hidden features and add-ons that many photographers are daunted and decide it isn't worth it. This class hopes to give you a basic understanding of the product's layout and features so that you have what you need to take the next step. Whether it is a Youtube tutorial, your own exploration or a Richard Sturdevant class.

We will cover, at a minimum:

    • application layout and organization
    • layers
    • masks
    • blending modes
    • selection
    • adjustment layers

Time permitting, we will introduce some advanced topics particularly important to photographers:
    • Actions
    • Frequency Separation
    • Dodge and Burn strategies

You can be a photographer in 2019 without at least a basic knowledge of Photoshop. But, should you?

    Bio:

Bruce F Press has been involved in photography his whole life. He first learned creative opportunities don't end in the camera at his father's elbow in the darkroom. Through the years he has set fire to plastic models, got too close to sharks and splattered $4000 worth of equipment on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on his photographic journey. Today, he continues to expand his understanding and expression every day for clients and himself.

Bruce F Press is a Certified Professional Photographer and, coincidentally, the owner of Bruce F Press Photography. He has been taking money from clients for almost a decade and dodging a day job for almost five years.

Richard Sturdevant, M.Photog., M. Artist., Cr., "Crushing the Box: Breaking the Creative Sound Barrier | Advanced Composites for Those Who Truly Want to Go to the Next Level" (add-on fee)

    PPA Continuing Education Merit Class!

Join Richard Sturdevant, newly crowned 4-Time PPA IPC Double Diamond Loan winner, for a trip into the artistic soul. Creating an exceptional fine art composite consists of many things, but the two that separate good from great are conception and finish. Conception and the ability to dream up a visual idea or to tell visual story that is original and unique to your vision is priceless. Equally important is the ability to bring it all together is such away that it is beautiful and meaningful to the viewer. The finish of the art should keep the viewer engaged in the content and not the technique. Everything in between this journey is trained execution.

“In this program I will share like never before on this process, known for my style, concepts and the way I finish up an image. I will share how to create concepts that reflect who you are and how to execute them and most of all finish them in such a beautiful way. I’m good at what I do and you will leave this workshop better for it.”

    Content will cover:

    • Conception
    • Resource gathering
    • Light creation and lighting to fit the scene
    • Using the right angle of view
    • Extraction
    • Composition
    • Color theory and Harmony
    • Illustration techniques that can be used on any image
    • Plug-in techniques
    • PS Painting techniques
    • Proven finishing techniques and presentation
    • Corel Painting Techniques

    Barbi Barnum: Playful Posing

"I didn't know you were posing me!"
We hear it all the time from our clients...I don't want our pictures to look "POSED" but they want the most flattering pictures they can get so what's a photographer to do? Playful posing keeps your clients so distracted they don't realize you're actually sneaking in that dreaded posing. But first you have to understand what's going on in your client's mind. We will dig into what clients are worried about going into a photo shoot and why they put up barriers. Then we'll talk about ways to move them through those barriers into a relaxed playful attitude that allows you to do your work. We'll talk about prompts that work and ways to have more fun with your clients.

     as Chris Garner, Cr.Photog., CPP

    presents an extended day program

    1:00pm - 9:30pm

(dinner break: 5-6:30pm and association updates 6:30-7pm)

    Deep Space Astrophotography

Deep space astrophotography is a perfect blend of science and art, and is possibly the most challenging thing you will ever attempt with a camera. The monetary rewards of this segment of photography are small, but the rewards to your soul and creative spirit are immeasurable. Join Chris as he walks you through the beginnings of this fascinating journey through our universe. You will learn initial capture, data manipulation, post-processing, and special tricks of the trade which will keep you from spinning your wheels. He will cover photographing planets, nebulae, galaxies, star clusters, supernovae remnants, and just about any other object found in the night sky. Most professional photographers already have some, if not all, of the equipment necessary to begin this journey. Chris will show you how to take what you have, and show you the baby steps that you can take to build your deep space astro toolbox and portfolio. Prepare to open your mind to a whole new world of photography and find the creative spark to take your everyday work to the next level!

    Chris Garner, Cr.Photog., CPP

As a third-generation photographer with a childhood and youth spent in the industry, and with 18 years spent running a multi-employee studio built around portraits and volume schools/sports photography, Chris was on the verge of burnout. He had trouble finding the creative spark necessary for photographers to produce their best work. In the summer of 2015, Chris decided to take a camera on vacation for the first time ever in hopes of finding something to get the creative juices flowing again. In the early hours of a moonless morning in Garden City Beach, South Carolina, Chris captured the Milky Way on his camera with a wide-angle lens and a tripod. From that moment on, astrophotography became his obsession. It brought to life a new form of creativity that Chris wasn’t expecting. Now, just three years into the craft, Chris has progressed from wide-angle landscapes with the stars to deep space astrophotography, capturing high-resolution images of nebulae, star clusters and galaxies thousands and millions of light years away.

1 PPA Continuing Education merit will be awarded for PPA members attending 6.5 hours of the program!

Baby's First Year: From Newborn to First Birthday -

Secrets to Creating Portraits That WOW!

We hope you will join us on Wednesday, March 27, 2019

for this an extended day program with MDPPA member

    Sylwia Ok, CPP

    1:00pm - 9:30pm

(dinner break: 5-6:30pm and association updates 6:30-7pm)

Have you considered adding a newborn and baby niche to your business? Have you been struggling with posing infants and babies? Have you ever been discouraged after the session with a newborn or baby? Have you ever been asked to photograph an infant and the baby was not quite cooperating? Would you like to improve your session flow, use the right lighting, and learn editing techniques? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, then join Sylwia Ok for this class!

Photographing newborns and babies is challenging but one of the most rewarding niches in the industry. There is nothing more magical than creating portraits of a baby that just arrived to this world a few days earlier, and documenting his/her major milestones within the first year of life. Sylwia will walk you through her portrait creation process, from setting up the space, essential items and equipment, styling and props, through typical workflow with basic and advanced poses. She will thoroughly explain all aspects of infant and baby photography, including editing techniques, and will provide you with valuable tips for each milestone that will help you create exceptional portraits that will WOW parents.

We are thrilled to be able to offer Sylwia’s class this March 27th, 2019!!

    Sylwia Ok, CPP

An award winning Portrait Artist and Certified Professional Photographer, Sylwia Ok, CPP, specializes in maternity, newborn and baby custom portraiture. Sylwia’s love of design and art was evident in her high school years, but her interest in photography sparked almost a decade later with the purchase of her first dSLR, Nikon d80. Soon after moving to Kodiak, Alaska in 2011, she opened her photography studio and successfully established her portrait work with the local community. Three years later, her family moved to Pasadena, Maryland where she opened her dream home-based boutique studio, re-established her business with new clients, and consistently delivers dazzling images of babies to gleeful parents.

Sylwia attributes her business success to creating an exceptional portrait experience for her clients and creating exquisite portraits, albums, and wall art they love. Sylwia has been a PPA member since 2012 and she joined MDPPA in 2017. Sylwia is a 2015 ICP Bronze Medalist, 2016 ICP Silver Medalist, 2018 ICP Gold Medalist, and is one of the 2018 Grand Imaging Award Finalists in the Children Category. At her first annual MDPPA print competition in 2018, Sylwia received an Award for the Best Portrait as well as the Best Photograph of a Child, and she was also named as one of the Top Ten MDPPA Photographers in 2017.
